Dryads are the spirits of the trees. They guard and protect them and in return the trees give them life for as long as the tree is alive. Many appear in the form of women so that they may have more power to protect their trees from the human male woodcutters. If they see a handsome man they fancy, they will turn him into a tree, providing the forest with more trees and male guardians to protect against human female woodcutters.
The dryads gave the Druids knowledge about the trees and plants, from whence their powers came.
So next time you cut down a tree, remember that you are not only killing a tree, a source of breathable air, you are killing a dryad.
